이야기
This was painted in 1848, and it was built to be a national dream. Norway had won its own constitution in 1814 after centuries under Denmark and Sweden, and artists set out to show the country what was distinctly Norwegian. Two of them made this together in a studio in Düsseldorf, far from home, pooling sketches from their travels in the west of the country. A wedding party rows across a calm fjord under steep mountains, the bride in the red costume and bridal crown of the Hardanger region, the groom tipping his hat in the first boat. None of it is a single real place. It is Norway assembled from parts, and prints of it spread so widely that a version became stage scenery for a song about the very scene it shows.
