La historia
1889 was the year Paris raised the Eiffel Tower for the World's Fair, and Monet spent it at a distance from all of that. In June he hung a large joint retrospective with Rodin at the Georges Petit gallery, then set about a public subscription to buy Manet's Olympia for the French state, writing to collectors for the better part of a year to get it done. The stacks of grain he painted that autumn stood in a field near the house he was renting at Giverny, a few minutes from his door. He bought that house the following year and began working the same stacks as a series, canvas after canvas at different hours. This one comes before the series. It hangs in Tel Aviv, in a museum founded in 1932 in the home of the city's first mayor, Meir Dizengoff.
