La historia

Lorenzo Lotto made this intimate panel in the 1520s or early 1530s, during years when he moved restlessly between Bergamo, Venice and the smaller towns of the Marche, taking commissions where he could find them. Here a husband and wife kneel in the plain dark clothes of their own day, having paid to be shown in the presence of the Virgin. The Christ child leans out from Mary's lap to meet their eyes and lift his hand in blessing, rewarding their piety on the spot. Lotto splits the picture in two, wrapping the holy pair in bright drapery while the couple stay pinned against a wall and an open window. Through that window is a fig branch, an old sign of the resurrection, and a strip of far-off landscape.
