La historia
In the autumn of 1906 Max Reinhardt had Munch design the sets for Ibsen's Ghosts at his new Kammerspiele in Berlin, and earlier that year Munch went to Weimar to paint Nietzsche, dead six years by then, for the Swedish banker Ernest Thiel. Between those jobs he was taking cures in German spa towns. His nerves and his drinking had brought him down the year before, and the baths were where he tried to get himself back into working order.
This park is one of the things he made while doing it. He painted it at Bad Kösen, a small salt spa in the Saale valley, during a stay that produced a run of park and garden pictures. He left the canvas unsigned.
