La historia

Port-Villez is a village on the far bank of the Seine a few kilometres downstream from Giverny, and Monet got there by boat. The museum in Columbus dates the canvas loosely, somewhere between 1883 and 1890, and catalogues it under a second title it also carried, A Gust of Wind. Those were the years Monet's money changed. He had arrived at Giverny as a tenant, and in November 1890 he bought the house and its land outright from his landlord for 22,000 francs, to be paid off over four years. It is number 1264 in the catalogue of his work. It came to Ohio in 1991 with 78 other paintings given by Howard and Babette Sirak, a Columbus couple who had spent 30 years assembling them.
