La storia

By 1894 Boudin was 70 years old and had been painting the same stretch of Channel coast for more than 40 years. He had built himself a house at Deauville a decade earlier and lived out his last years there, going south each winter once his health began to fail, and he went on making marines like this one almost to the end. He died at Deauville in 1898. The Mulhouse museum holds the picture on deposit rather than as its own property. Its collection was put together by the Societe industrielle de Mulhouse, the manufacturers' association that founded the museum in 1864, and when the museum passed to the city in 1958 the older paintings stayed with the society.
