La storia

What hangs in Munich is a corner. This panel is only the bottom right-hand piece of a Last Judgment that once ran about two metres by three, the rest of it lost. Painted around 1515 by someone working in Hieronymus Bosch's manner, it keeps the part he did best, the damned herded through a burning landscape by demons with the bodies of animals and machines. On the left edge you can just catch the tip of a robe, probably from a figure of John the Baptist who stood in the vanished middle. The fragment was heavily overpainted at some point, and in 1936 a restorer took that later paint away to reach what survived underneath.
