This is the only museum in North America devoted to the art of German-speaking Europe, and it began in 1901 as a hall of plaster casts, copies of Germanic sculpture assembled by a Harvard professor of German, Kuno Francke. What made it singular came later, and by an unhappy route.
When the Nazis shut the Bauhaus and its teachers scattered, many landed in America. Walter Gropius, the school's founder, joined Harvard's architecture faculty in 1937, and from 1947 he helped the museum gather what is now the largest Bauhaus collection outside Germany, along with the archives of Gropius himself and of the painter Lyonel Feininger.
Around that core sit strong holdings of German Expressionism and Viennese Secession art. The collection is part of the Harvard Art Museums and shown in rotation in their Cambridge galleries, so what hangs on a given visit changes.
