Købke painted this a few steps from his own front door. From 1833 he lived with his parents on Blegdamsvej in Copenhagen, right beside the Sortedam lake, and this is that lake on a still November morning, the trees nearly bare and the light low and pale. A single man walks alone along the water. It belongs to the golden age of Danish painting, a quiet stretch when artists like Købke stayed close to home and found their subjects in the streets and shorelines of everyday Copenhagen rather than in grand history. Denmark later placed the picture in its official cultural canon, a list of the works it counts as defining.
