A história
Caspar David Friedrich was born in Greifswald in 1774, and for a long time the town that shaped Germany's greatest Romantic landscape painter had almost none of his work to show. The Pomeranian State Museum changed that when it opened its picture gallery in 2000, and it now holds seven of his oil paintings along with a large group of drawings.
Among them is a small watercolour of the Greifswald market square that Friedrich painted on the spot during his honeymoon in 1818, and views of the ruined abbey at Eldena that reappear across his larger canvases. The galleries sit in a former school building put up by Johann Gottfried Quistorp, the architect who gave the young Friedrich his first drawing lessons.
The wider museum runs well beyond him, tracing 14,000 years of Pomeranian history across some 60,000 objects.
