История

Marc painted this fox in the summer of 1911, the year he and Wassily Kandinsky began gathering the artists who would become the Blue Rider group in Munich. He made it in July in the Bonn studio of his friend August Macke, another young painter. Marc had worked out a private language of colour, where blue stood for the spiritual and a stern, masculine principle, and he wanted to paint animals as he imagined they felt the world from inside, not as they looked from outside. So the fox is built from shards of deep blue and black, curled tight and alert, half dissolved into a landscape of green and red splinters around it. Marc was killed at Verdun in 1916, five years after this, one of many artists of his generation lost in the First World War.
