История

Monet first spotted Giverny in 1883 from the window of a train, a small Normandy village where the Epte joins the Seine, and he rented a house there that he would later buy and never leave. He painted this landscape in 1887, years before the water garden and the lily ponds that made the place famous. There is no pond yet, just fields and a screen of trees worked in short, broken strokes, the light and weather caught more than the scenery itself. He was in his late forties and still renting, testing the ground he would spend the next 40 years reshaping. The canvas travelled a long way from Normandy and now belongs to the Museo Soumaya in Mexico City.
