История
Jeanne Hébuterne was 21 and an art student when she became Modigliani's companion and model and, by 1919, the mother of his daughter. He painted her more than 20 times, always with the same auburn hair, the swanlike neck and the pale, pupil-less eyes turned inward. This canvas dates to 1919, when she was pregnant again and he was dying of tuberculosis in their cold Montparnasse rooms. He died that January of 1920, at 35. Jeanne, nine months pregnant, took her own life two days later. Dr Albert Barnes, the Philadelphia collector, bought this while Modigliani was still barely known and hung it among his Renoirs and Cézannes, where under the foundation's strict rules it stayed off wide public view for decades.
