История

Monet moved to the riverside town of Argenteuil, just down the new railway line from Paris, at the end of 1871, and the few years he spent there are where Impressionism really found its feet. The town had become a weekend playground for Parisians who came out to sail, and the Seine basin filled with pleasure boats. He painted this in 1872, the tree-lined promenade on the left, a road bridge behind, sailing boats at rest on the water. He breaks the light into short separate strokes so the whole surface seems to shift. The collector Isaac de Camondo later left it to the French state.
