Луга в Живерни

Monet had moved to the village of Giverny in 1883, and by the summer of 1888 he had stopped travelling in search of subjects and started mining the fields on his own doorstep. He walked out to the meadows just south of the village and painted them again and again, watching how the same grass and trees changed as the light and weather shifted through the day. That way of working, returning to one ordinary motif and recording it under changing conditions, was about to become the core of his art. Within a few years it would produce the haystacks and the rows of poplars. This canvas is one of a group he made of the same meadows across that single summer.
