Несение креста

История
By 1526 Lorenzo Lotto had spent years working away from Venice, out in the provincial towns of the Marches, and he had learned to make faith feel physical rather than grand. Here he crops the scene as tightly as a face pressed to yours. Christ carries the cross, eyes brimming, while a soldier hauls on the rope around his neck and an executioner's hand grips his shoulder. There is no landscape, no crowd, no distance to soften the moment. Lotto signed and dated the picture on the beam of the cross itself, low on the right, so that his own name rides the very weight Christ is straining under.
