История

In 1905 Matisse spent the summer at Collioure, a small fishing port on the Mediterranean near the Spanish border, and this is the view from his rented room looking out over the harbour. What matters is how he painted it. The masts, the water, the pots of flowers on the balcony, the walls to either side, all of it is set down in raw, unmixed colour, with no attempt to make the light behave the way the eye expects. That autumn he hung it at the Salon d'Automne in Paris, and a critic looking at the room where these canvases hung called the painters fauves, wild beasts, and the name stuck to the whole movement. The pink and green he laid into the sky here were exactly the kind of thing that provoked the insult. The little sailing boats you can just read in the harbour beyond the balcony are the actual fishing fleet he could see from that window.
