Munch returned to this vision for nearly 30 years, and the tempera-on-cardboard version here is one of the later ones, made around 1910, while he was recovering from a nervous collapse that had kept him in a Copenhagen clinic for eight months. The burning sky came from a real evening years before, on a road above the fjord outside Kristiania, when he felt what he later called a great scream passing through nature. Some tie that red to the volcanic dusks after the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa, which stained skies across Europe for months. The hunched figure presses its hands to its head, hearing a sound that Munch said belonged to nature itself. This is the canvas two armed men carried out of the Munch Museum in 2004. It came back two years later with faint water damage still in a corner.
