История

Manet painted this young woman in a butter-yellow cape in 1881, with a small pink flower at her buttonhole. The model was Jeanne Demarsy, a young actress he used that same year for Spring, one of the last pictures he showed at the Salon to real success. He had little time left. By 1881 the illness that would kill him was already advanced, his leg failing, and he worked increasingly on smaller, quicker canvases like this. He died in 1883, at 51. The painting reached the museum in Lyon in 1997, left to it by the actress Jacqueline Delubac, who had built a collection of modern French art.
