故事

In February 1426 a Pisan notary named Giuliano di Colino signed Masaccio to paint a large altarpiece for his chapel, settling on 80 florins. Masaccio was only about 24, and within two years he would be dead. The altarpiece was later taken apart and its panels scattered across Europe. This strip from the base, the predella, holds two grim little legends. On one side Julian the Hospitaller, tricked by the devil who stands between them, murders his own parents in their bed. On the other, Saint Nicholas quietly drops gold through a window to provide a dowry for three poor sisters. Scholars have long felt this particular panel was carried out by Andrea di Giusto, the assistant paid to work at Masaccio's side in Pisa.
