故事

The four canvases in this set were probably made for the mirror room of the Palazzo Corner at San Polo in Venice, to be seen together among the glass. The story comes from Tasso's Jerusalem Delivered, a poem about the First Crusade printed in 1581 and still a standard subject for Venetian decoration 160 years later.

This is the third scene. The knight Rinaldo has been argued back into the crusade by two older comrades, and he stands bareheaded with his shield again, hesitating, while the sorceress Armida pleads with him to stay. Tiepolo was painting it in the same years as the frescoes of the Villa Cordellina near Vicenza.

The set left Venice long ago. In 1913 it was bought by James Deering, whose money came from American farm machinery, for his winter house at Vizcaya in Florida, and he left it to Chicago when he died in 1925.
