故事

Thomas Gainsborough painted this life-size portrait in 1780, and it still hangs in the Royal Court in Saint Helier, on the island its sitter governed. Henry Seymour Conway, a soldier and Whig politician, had been made Governor of Jersey in 1772, and when Gainsborough painted him the island was a nervous front-line place, within sight of the French coast while Britain fought France over the American colonies. Weeks after the portrait was done, on a January night in 1781, a French force landed and marched on Saint Helier before being beaten off in the town square. Conway had one more turn ahead. Two years later, back in Parliament, he moved the motion that pushed Britain to give up the war in America. Here he stands full length in his uniform and orders, the governor the island court still keeps on its wall.
