Die Geschichte

The Moulin Rouge had been open only three years when Toulouse-Lautrec painted this in 1892, and he had already made himself its chronicler. The top-hatted man is no stranger. He is William Warrener, an English painter and a friend, shown leaning toward two women in the dance hall's crowd. Look at his ear, which Lautrec has flushed red, the one blush that gives away how forward the conversation has turned. The whole thing is brushed quickly onto cardboard, because it was a working study. Lautrec used it to design a color lithograph, one of the printed images that were carrying his Montmartre onto walls all over Paris.
