Andrea Tavernier

The story
At the Venice Biennale of 1922 Andrea Tavernier was given space for 36 of his works, a large showing for a painter then in his 60s. He was born in Turin in 1858 and trained at the Accademia Albertina under the history painter Andrea Gastaldi, but landscapes and views of towns became his real subject. He first exhibited at the Turin Promotrice in 1884 and travelled to Rome and along the Adriatic coast in search of motifs. One of his best-known pictures, Autumn Morning of 1902, in the Gallerie d'Italia in Milan, follows a woman walking along a country road in Piedmont. He died at Grottaferrata, in the hills outside Rome, in 1932.
