Antonis Mor and studio

Habsburg Netherlands · High Renaissance

The story

Antonis Mor and studio is the name museums use when a picture came out of Mor's workshop and the master's own share of the painting cannot be pinned down. A court portraitist of his rank was expected to supply more than one version of a likeness, for relatives, allies and officials, and assistants did much of that repeat work from his models. Their names are mostly lost. The best known painter to learn from him, Alonso Sánchez Coello, went on to become the court portraitist of Philip II of Spain.

The label goes on a portrait of an unknown man in gold-coloured clothes and heavy gold chains at the Mauritshuis in The Hague. It carries Mor's Latin signature and the date 1561, and the museum still lists it as Mor and studio.
