Attributed to a Passau Painter

Holy Roman Empire · Late Gothic

The story

In the Belvedere this name goes on a small panel dated 1472 and thought to come from a painter working in Passau, the Bavarian bishop's city on the Danube whose diocese then reached deep into Austria. Even that attribution carries a question mark, and no individual painter has been securely named.

The picture shows Saint Cyriacus, an early Roman martyr counted among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, with a donor kneeling at the lower left beside a coat of arms that nobody has yet identified. It belonged to the imperial picture gallery in Vienna and passed to the Belvedere in 1953.
