Attributed to Altichiero
Lordship of Verona · Italian Gothic, Trecento
The story
Attributed to Altichiero is the label a museum uses when it thinks a work may be by Altichiero, the leading Veronese painter of the later 14th century, but cannot prove it. With him that step is especially hard. Documents record him in Verona and Padua between 1369 and 1384, and they show that he painted altarpieces, yet no surviving panel painting can be given to him with certainty. What is known of his hand comes from frescoes.
In Verona even most of those are gone. He painted scenes of history in the palaces of the Scaliger lords, and those cycles are lost. One large fresco survives in place, the votive painting of the Cavalli family in the church of Sant'Anastasia, where armoured knights of the family kneel before the Virgin. Any panel given to him is judged by comparison with walls like that one.
