The story
The words "attributed to" are how museums name a likely painter while admitting the proof is incomplete. The Belvedere in Vienna puts it more briefly still, as a question mark after the name of Simon von Taisten, a painter from the Puster valley in the Tyrol who was active in the late 1400s.
The panel behind that question mark shows Saint George killing the dragon, painted around 1490. An attribution of this kind rests on style, on how closely a picture matches the frescoes and altarpieces securely given to a painter, and here the museum stops short of certainty.
The panel came to the Belvedere in 1963, transferred by Austria's Federal Monuments Office from a storeroom of the archbishop's residence in Salzburg.
