Attributed to the Master of Grossgmain

The story

This name is a cautious label for a work placed close to the Master of Grossgmain, the anonymous painter active in Salzburg from about 1480 to 1500 and named after four altar panels in the village church of Grossgmain. The attribution stays open, and the picture is kept apart from his secure works.

The work is a large Crucifixion from about 1470, painted on spruce, in which Mary and John stand beneath the cross together with Saint Catherine and Saint Sebastian. Its date falls some years before the period in which the master himself is usually placed. The panel came from Salzburg into the imperial picture gallery in Vienna in 1807, and today it hangs in the Upper Belvedere.
