Attributed to the Master of the Innerochsenbach St Anne Altarpiece

The story

Saint Benedict appears here before the cave at Subiaco, east of Rome, where as a young man he withdrew from the world to live alone. The narrow panel, painted on fir around 1510, is attributed to a painter known only by a working name, the Master of the Innerochsenbach St Anne Altarpiece. The name comes from an altarpiece of Saint Anne dated 1510 in the small church of Innerochsenbach, in Lower Austria.

Nothing is known of his life. The Benedict panel came from Lambach Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Upper Austria. It was given to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in 1935 and passed to the Belvedere in 1953.
