The story
Camillo Berlinghieri was a painter of Ferrara, the old ducal city in northern Italy, working in the early 1600s. He trained under Carlo Bononi, the leading Ferrarese painter of the day, and kept close to that local Baroque manner of warm colour and soft light.
Most of his work stayed in his home region: a Gathering of the Manna for the church of San Niccolò and an Annunciation for Sant'Antonio Abate, both in Ferrara. In Venice, where some of his pictures ended up, collectors knew him simply as Il Ferraresino, the little Ferrarese. He died in Ferrara in 1635.
