Carlo Caliari

1570–1596 · Italian · Venetian painting

The story

He was the youngest son of Paolo Veronese, one of the giants of 16th-century Venetian painting, and he grew up inside his father's busy workshop. Everyone called him Carletto, little Carlo. Veronese thought enough of the boy's gift to send him for a time to the Bassano family, fellow Venetian painters famous for their earthy colour, so that he would form a hand of his own rather than simply copy his father.

When Veronese died in 1588, Carlo was still a teenager. With his brother Gabriele and his uncle Benedetto he finished the master's unfinished canvases and kept the workshop going, the three of them often signing together as the heirs of Paolo.

Carletto was reckoned the most talented of the three, and many pictures once credited to his father are now thought to be partly his work. He died in 1596, only 26 years old.
