Circle of the Master of Santa Anastasia

Lordship of Verona · Italian Gothic

The story

Circle of the Master of Santa Anastasia is the label the Castelvecchio museum gives to statues that share the manner of the anonymous sculptor named after the church of Sant'Anastasia in Verona, but that it does not believe he carved himself. Circle is a cautious word. It covers sculptors who trained in that workshop, worked beside it, or carried its habits on into the middle decades of the 14th century, and the sources no longer say which.

What links their figures is the master's way of working, with broad, solid bodies and ornament laid over the surface of the stone without breaking its weight. Their names are lost, and the label rests on comparison alone.
