E. K. Lautter
Holy Roman Empire
The story
Almost everything known about this painter comes from a single canvas in Vienna. The Belvedere lists him as Lautter, active roughly between 1700 and 1750, and is not even sure of his initials, E. K. or perhaps E. R. No birth or death dates are recorded, and the museum holds no other work under his name.
That one picture, The Lacemaker, shows a girl learning bobbin lace from a young woman while an old woman spins beside them. It belonged to the Habsburg imperial picture gallery, passed from the Kunsthistorisches Museum to the Belvedere in 1922, and was shown in the Belvedere's Baroque exhibition in 2013.
