Foied Painter

Ager Faliscus

The story

The Foied Painter is known by a single word. Foied means "today" in Faliscan, the language of Falerii in the Tiber valley north of Rome and a close relative of Latin, and it is the first word of a short line painted on two of his drinking cups. Modern scholars took it as his name.

He worked at Falerii around the middle of the 4th century BC, when the town's workshops were turning out red-figure pottery in the Athenian manner, and he decorated cups. Some catalogues speak of a Foied Group rather than a single painter.
