Follower of Eugène Delacroix

The story

Pierre Andrieu joined Delacroix's studio in 1843 and became the assistant he relied on most, working beside him on the big decorative schemes of his later years, the murals in the Paris church of Saint-Sulpice among them. After Delacroix died in 1863, Andrieu opened a studio of his own and went on painting copies of his master's pictures alongside work of his own. Later a flood ruined his home, money ran short, and an allegation has followed him ever since that he passed off some of his own canvases as Delacroix's.

Follower of Eugène Delacroix is the heading a museum gives to a work it sees as painted in his manner by someone whose name it cannot recover. It claims less than attributed to, and it does not say that the painter was Andrieu, or anyone else who knew Delacroix.

At the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston the heading is used for a small Descent from the Cross, which the museum dates to the 1860s.
