The story
Gertrud Bock-Schnirlin is one of the many capable painters of her generation about whom little now survives beyond a name, a few dates, and a handful of canvases that turn up at auction.
Born Gertrud Bock in Hamburg in 1878, she trained at the royal art school in Berlin and then in the private studio of Reinhold Lepsius, a well-connected Berlin portrait painter. She showed at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, painted portraits and oil studies, and made copies after old masters such as Rembrandt. In her last years she lived and worked at the moated castle of Inzlingen, near the Swiss border, where she died around 1948.
