Haarlem Master (active circa 1600)
Dutch
The story
Nobody knows this painter's name. 'Haarlem Master' is a label of convenience, pinned on an anonymous hand working in the Dutch city of Haarlem around 1600, when scholars can sort pictures by style but cannot attach a person to them.
The single work here shows the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, the Virgin's mother, and Saint Joseph. It is a quiet holy-family grouping of the kind Catholic patrons still wanted even as the northern Netherlands turned Protestant, and its careful, slightly old-fashioned manner is what pins it to Haarlem around 1600. No signature or document has yet come forward to give the painter a name.
