Nicolaus Moreau

1805–1834 · Austrian Empire · Biedermeier

The story

Nicolaus Moreau died at 28, so his whole career fits into a few years around 1830. Born in Vienna in 1805, he was the son of Charles de Moreau, a French architect who had moved to Austria in 1801 and designed many buildings in the city. He learned first from his father, then at the Vienna Academy, and painted portraits, animals and scenes of everyday Viennese life in the Biedermeier years, the calm, domestic era after the Napoleonic Wars. His street views of Vienna are valued today as records of the city. The Belvedere's Austrian Veterans and a Plaster Figure Seller in a Tavern was painted in 1832. Moreau showed work at the Academy's exhibitions of 1833 and 1834, and he died in Vienna in February 1834.
