Oscar Björck
1860–1929 · Sweden · Realism, Swedish art
The story
Oscar Björck's career contains two very different artistic worlds. As a young painter he spent summers at Skagen in Denmark, joining the international circle now known as the Skagen painters. He worked there in 1882, 1883 and 1884, painting fishermen, beaches, schools and the life of the small coastal community. Launching the Boat belongs to that period. After returning to Sweden, however, Björck became best known as a portrait painter. He painted members of the royal family and leading public figures and eventually became a professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. The shift matters because the Skagen pictures preserve an earlier Björck, still working among artists drawn to outdoor light and ordinary coastal labor, before official portraiture became the public face of his career.
