Tizianello
1570–1650 · Republic of Venice
The story
Tizianello, or 'little Titian,' was born in Venice around 1570 into the Vecellio family, the clan of the great Titian. His father Marco Vecellio was Titian's nephew and one of his closest studio hands, and Tizianello followed the family trade as a painter in the master's manner.
His own pictures, like the Allegory in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, are the modest work of a follower who painted in the family style. What secured his name came in 1622, when he commissioned and published a short life of Titian, prefaced in his own words, tracing the family tree back to Cadore in the mountains north of Venice. For a long time that little book was among the earliest accounts of how Titian actually lived. He died in Venice around 1650.
