Workshop of Altichiero

Lordship of Verona · Italian Gothic, Trecento

The story

Workshop of Altichiero means that a museum believes a work came out of Altichiero's own team, painted by the assistants who worked under him rather than by the master himself. It is a closer link than circle, which can include painters outside the shop, and a weaker one than attributed, which leaves open that he painted it with his own hand.

For a fresco painter a workshop was a necessity. A wall had to be painted section by section while the plaster was still wet, so the work went fast and needed many hands. Assistants ground the colours, laid the plaster, traced the designs and painted ornament and secondary figures, and the most trusted could carry out whole compositions in the master's manner. With Altichiero, the leading Veronese painter of the later 14th century, the share of each hand is often hard to measure, because so much of what survives is worn.
