A still life with game, vegetables and fruit on a table, with a parrot on a branch
Details
The story
In 1746 this canvas belonged to Isabel de Farnesio, wife of Philip V, and hung at her palace of La Granja in the room where the royal table was laid. It was doing the same job at Aranjuez in 1794, and again in 1818, a painted table of food on the wall of a room where real food was carried in. The clerk who listed it in 1746 described a table under a red cloth, dead birds, a basket of fruit, and a parrot eating from it. The Prado's record identifies that parrot as a blue-fronted amazon, a South American bird that came to European ports through the Atlantic trade. In the lower right corner, next to the signature F. Snyders fecit, sits a small fleur-de-lis, the mark the queen's pictures carried.
