A Woman Making Pancakes
Details
The story
Brouwer is best remembered for smoky taverns and men coming to blows, so this quieter scene is a change of key. A woman leans over a pan at the hearth, turning a pancake, while a man and a child wait close by. In the Netherlands of the 1630s pancakes were homely, cheap food tied to the feast days before Lent, and painters liked the kitchen as a stage for ordinary life. Brouwer keeps it small and loosely brushed, the firelight catching the woman's hands and the rim of the pan. There is no sermon here and no fight, just the work of a meal being made. The painting has hung in Basel since 1914.
