A Young Woman Selling Vegetables at the Door
Details
The story
In the late 1650s, back in his home town of Dordrecht, Nicolaes Maes spent a few years painting the kind of moment nobody thinks to record. This is one of them, from around 1658: a young woman at a house door with her vegetables, caught in the everyday business of buying and selling that filled a Dutch street each morning.
The doorway is really the subject. For Maes a threshold is where two worlds meet, the public street and the private household, and much of daily life happened right there at the step. Produce came to the door because there was no other way to get it, and a household bought its greens from whoever carried them past. The warm brown shadow around the figure is the habit he kept from his years in Rembrandt's Amsterdam studio, laid over a plain scene of a girl and a basket.
