The story

This shaded path was painted in 1882, the year Caillebotte helped put together the seventh Impressionist exhibition in Paris, after months of quarrelling with Degas over who should be allowed to show. Away from that fight, he was painting outdoors. The French title, Allée sous-bois, en Normandie, places this lane in Normandy, where in the early 1880s he worked repeatedly on the coast around Trouville and Villers-sur-Mer. The canvas is about 80 by 60 centimetres and belongs to a private collection. In Marie Berhaut's catalogue of Caillebotte's paintings it is number 236.
