The story

This panel carries a date, 1394, and that single number matters more than it first looks. It is the earliest fixed point we have for Niccolo di Pietro, a Venetian painter whose documented life otherwise drifts through scattered records for the next 30 years. A man kneels at the Virgin's feet, painted smaller than everyone around him in the old way of showing a donor. He was Vulciano Belgarzone, from Zadar across the Adriatic in Dalmatia, then part of Venice's world, and he paid for the picture for a church back in his own city. Angels crowd the throne playing instruments. The gold ground and the crisp, courtly line belong to the elegant Gothic taste that Venice shared with much of Europe around 1400.
