Canal with Dark Clouds
Details
The story
Munch painted this in 1908, the second of two summers he spent at Warnemünde, a Baltic resort on the German coast, where he rented a house on the street that runs beside the harbour channel. He was 44 and had gone there to rest and to work outdoors, and what came out of those months is beaches, bathers, neighbours and water. He never sold this canvas. It stayed in his own keeping and passed to Oslo after his death, and the museum there holds several more canal views from the same year, one of them titled Canal in Warnemünde.
