Chestnut trees in Osny
Details
The story
By 1883 Pissarro had spent more than a decade painting the countryside around Pontoise, northwest of Paris, and these chestnuts stand at Osny, a village right beside it. He was in his early 50s and still working mostly out of doors, setting the bare frames of the trees against the tilled fields and the roofs behind. Money was short through these years and he moved house often to hold the rent down. The next year, in 1884, he left the Pontoise country for good and settled further north at Eragny, where he would live out the rest of his life.
