The story

The episode comes from Luke. The disciples, shut in a room after the crucifixion, take the risen Christ for a ghost, so he asks whether they have anything to eat and swallows a piece of grilled fish in front of them, to show there is a body there. Duccio staged that proof as an ordinary meal. On a white embroidered cloth he laid two dishes of fish, small bread rolls and knives, with the apostles pressed close around the table under a loggia. The panel is one of the scenes that follow the Resurrection on the back of the altarpiece he finished for Siena cathedral in 1311, painted at a size you have to stand near to read, a few hand-spans across.
